OECD 431: In vitro skin corrosion (3D model)
The OECD 431: In vitro Skin Corrosion 3D-Model Test guideline assesses the potential of an agent to cause skin corrosion. The test agent is applied to the 3D model, which consists of a reconstructed epidermis with a functional stratum corneum to mimic human skin, and cell viability assessed. The principle behind the test is that corrosive substances can infiltrate the cell and, as they are cytotoxic to the underlying layers, will reduce cell viability below a certain threshold. This allows identification and classification of corrosive substances, which is essential to ensure safe handling, packing and transportation of chemicals, pesticides and cosmetics that have the potential to cause skin tissue damage.
