Asthma: Ovalbumin sensitization and challenge

Ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and challenge induces allergic responses such as airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) eosinophilia, allergic cytokines and raised systemic IgE.

Validated positive controls in this model include oral steroids dexamethasone and inhaled steroids budesonide and fluticasone propionate.

OVA sensitisation (i.p.) and aerosolised OVA challenge induces BAL eosinophilia and increases in allergic cytokines such as IL-5 (data generated in the BN rat). The induced inflammation in this model is reversed with oral treatment of the steroid Budesonide. OVA sensitisation and challenge induces AHR to methacholine, this is reversed by administration of the oral steroid Dexamethasone (data generated in the Balb/c mouse).
