OECD 420/OCSPP 870.1100: Acute oral toxicity (fixed dose)
The method provides information on hazardous properties and allows a substance to be classified for acute toxicity. Only moderately toxic doses are used. Research models are dosed in a stepwise procedure using fixed doses.
The initial dose level is selected based on a sighting study, as the dose expected to produce some signs of toxicity, without causing severe toxic effects or mortality. Further groups may be dosed at higher or lower fixed doses, depending on the presence or absence of signs of toxicity or mortality.
Results from this study can include measurements, daily detailed observations and pathology reports.
